Playing Sport

Postby Sofie on Tue Aug 12, 2008 10:21 am

What does everyone do about playing sport and having poor vision/nystagmus? It was recommended that I wear contact lenses, but someone toldme that when they wore them, they sometimes fell out. I can't see that well without my glasses.

I have nystagmus and struggled through school with it - it did not realise that it was causing my problems.

I got hard contact lenses when I was 15, they were not easy to get used to and if the wind blew a bit of grit in your eye it's so painful. But I was able to run without my glasses bouncing on my nose and making me dizzy! I had to wear my glasses for swimming as I can't see anything without them but the school wouldn't allow me to wear them in the pool so I couldn't take part and got shouted at by the teachers for not paying attention

The best thing I've ever done is buy daily disposable lenses. they don't hurt, I have no problems when the wind blows. I can wear them swimming - they have never come out in the pool (I wear goggles if going underwater). They are a bit more expensive but you don't have all the hassle of cleaning them - the number of times I was on my hands and knees feeling the carpet for my hard lenses that I had dropped while cleaning! Having new lenses every day cuts down the possiblity of infections. The best thing is that you can keep a spare pair in your purse - so if you ever did lose one then you always have a back-up. In the 10 years I have had daily lenses I think I've needed my spare lenses only 2 or 3 times.

Hope this helps. If you need any other information just post here and I'll do my best to get back to you :D

Thanks.

Over the last few months, I've found my glasses to be useless, so getting contacts probably isn't worth it. :?

Actually, the contacts should work better than the glasses, assuming they are fitted well. The contacts will move with your eyes, as opposed to the glasses which assume you always look front and center(unless there are prisms in the glasses).
